Growing up, some of my best childhood memories were in libraries. Thanks to librarians and library staff, I had a space to learn and grow, as well as access to books that transported me to rich, vibrant worlds. It is a gift that has kept on giving. From Roots to Star Trek to Reading Rainbow, my love of reading and unimpeded pursuit of knowledge have been central to my life as well as my career. It’s also the reason I am writing to you on my favorite day of National Library Week—National Library Workers Day.

Library workers play a critical role in our communities by providing the building blocks for lifelong success, but they need your support. At The New York Public Library, they're on the front lines, providing computer access, homework help, enrichment activities, and new life skills—or help finding the perfect book to get lost in. That's no easy feat in a world where book bans are on the rise and libraries are forced to do more with less—including here in New York City, where public libraries are facing a staggering $58.3 million proposed budget cut.

These proposed cuts could have devastating impacts for New Yorkers, who have already lost access to seven-day service due to a previous round of budget cuts. The cuts proposed for next year would lead to even further service reductions, including the loss of yet another open day at most libraries in the city.

On this National Library Workers Day, the best way I can think of to support library workers is to stand up for your library. Add your name to a letter of support and tell City leaders: No Cuts to Libraries.

Library workers provide critical free resources—from storytimes to ESOL classes to after-school support—to New Yorkers of all stripes. They help level the playing field and set kids up for success. We can't risk their futures—join me in speaking out on behalf of libraries. Take a moment to sign a letter telling City leaders how important it is to you to keep New York City libraries funded.

Thank you for showing City leaders why we love libraries and why they deserve to be fully funded. But you don't have to take my word for it—head to your nearest branch today and see for yourself how library workers strengthen our communities. And make sure to thank them for all they do!

Thank you,
LeVar Burton
