Digital Files for Editorial, Commercial, and Other Uses

Updated May 5, 2016

We have updated our policies and workflows regarding public domain materials—for select files explicitly marked “No Known U.S. Copyright,” patrons can now download the highest resolution files the Library has from each item’s page on Digital Collections. Likewise, NYPL no longer requires patrons to fill out a request form for those materials and no longer collects any fees for access to those files.

Given that these materials have no U.S. copyright restrictions associated with them, users do not need NYPL’s permission to use or reuse those materials for any type of usage, commercial or otherwise. Please note, the items may be still subject to rights of privacy, rights of publicity, and other restrictions. Though not required, if you want to credit us as the source, please use the following statement, "From The New York Public Library," and provide a link back to the item on the Digital Collections site. Doing so helps us track how our collection is used and helps justify freely releasing even more content in the future.

For all other materials, see instructions below for requesting new photography or existing files.

Contact us at or 212-930-0091 if you have any questions.
