The Mott Haven Branch of The New York Public Library, open to the public since 1905, is the oldest library building in the Bronx. The brick and limestone structure was declared an official New York City landmark in 1969. The branch serves a large and diverse community of all ages, with strong links to neighborhood schools. There is a community room on the third floor that is available for community group meetings as well as library programs. Additional collections and programs include:

  • Collections in English and Spanish for adults, teenagers, and children available for borrowing and use in the library
  • Community Information collection
  • Personal computers and software for free public use by appointment
  • Internet access for free public use by appointment
  • Special events for all ages, including concerts, poetry workshops and readings, picture book hours, and craft programs
  • English classes for speakers of other languages held during fall, winter, and spring
  • Class visits by appointment

Information About Environmental Remediation Projects in Your Community

Brownfields are properties where redevelopment is complicated by actual or suspected environmental contamination from past land usage. Because of New York City's long industrial history, brownfields are found in areas throughout the five boroughs. The New York City Office of Environmental Remediation offers programs that encourage environmental investigation of lightly-to-moderately contaminated sites, and that oversee clean up appropriate to a site's new end use.
