ACTUAL EXHIBIT IS ON VIEW AT THE BRANCH FROM MAY 15 THROUGH JULY 15, 2024.

Helen Levin is pleased to present a selection of her Abstract Paintings inspired
by contemporary Architecture, and a Selection of her Drawing Advocacy Text in
the St. George Library Center Reference Room. Currently, Levin shares a new
exhibit focused on her architecture-inspired paintings, along with her published
writings on behalf of getting the word out about the importance of Art, and
especially Drawing practice, in people’s lives! Levin’s recent paintings on canvas
and paper have their inspiration from the sculptural quality, flow of light, angles,
colors, and textures found in contemporary architecture. Her current exhibit is a
new iteration with different artwork from her prior exhibit in 2023, held at
Wagner College Union Gallery.

This exhibit also shares mention about the artist’s drawing techniques, which
she honed with adult art students locally, and then shared at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, in a course she conducted (January 1994) for students of
architecture, urban planning, and product design; it was titled, “Accelerated
Drawing and Visualization for the Design Process.” Facts about this are presented
in a wall text and a photograph showing Levin instructing her I.A.P. class at M.I.T.
The artist, soon after, wrote an essay supporting her position in favor of freehand
drawing practice within architects’ training; it was published in the M.I.T. Press
publication, Leonardo International Journal of Art, Science and Technology (Feb.
2002. Endnote p.117-118). Also in her long teaching career, Levin developed and
presented a pilot program implementing drawing practice for adult new readers for
a NYC Dept. of Education’s Adult Literacy Program, in 1985 through1986.
Handout articles about these, plus another drawing advocacy piece she wrote for
an “Art Advisory” for the National Art Education Association, are shared at no cost
to exhibit attendees, as part of this exhibit program at the St. George Library
Center.

About the artist and her work: Helen Levin is dedicated to abstract art (she’s a
formalist), and her career trajectory is rooted in much of the philosophy expressed
by the early 20th century painters: Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, Wassily
Kandinsky, and Piet Mondriaan— and then later in the American Abstract
Expressionist Movement.

Her “Meet the Artist” talk at the St. George Library Auditorium on May 23 from 2 - 4 p.m. will give the audience an opportunity to learn about her innovative “accelerated
drawing" techniques.

Helen Levin thanks the library staff: Robert Gibbs, Peter Hegel, and the building
services crew for their support.
The artist’s studio is in St. George; her art website is: helenlevin.com.
